Wakame is one of the most appreciated seaweed around the world. Pacific Harvest’s NZ Wakame is wild harvested and dried naturally to preserve its natural colour and nutritional properties. The white powder sometimes found on the dried leaves is a naturally occuring amino-acid with a highly sought after savoury taste called ‘Umami’ – an ingredient prized for its flavour enhancing properties. This Wakame from NZ is presented as a large leaf ans can be used as a wrap for food.

Although Wakame is not native in New Zealand, several species can be found in the wild. Until recently Wakame was considered a noxious weed and several unsuccessful attempts were made to eradicate it. Biosecurity NZ is now allowing its harvest with a few permits. Our NZ Wakame is harvested from several sites around New Zealand and dried naturally as a leaf. To re-hydrate, simply soak the dry saeweed in tepid water for 5-10 minutes and the leaves will expand about 5 times their dry size.
